Positive- Birth Rate
The birth rate is lowered as most migrants are young men.
Positive- Pressure on Resources and Employment
Less pressure on employment and resources – so more jobs, food water and shelter to go around
Positive- Skills
If migrants return, they may do so with more enhanced skills which will benefit Mexico’s economy.
Positive- Mexican Economy
Migrants earn US dollars and can send money home to Mexico which stimulates the economy - legal and illegal immigrants together send some $6 billion a year back to Mexico
Negative- Economically Active Citizens
The Mexican countryside has a shortage of economically active people. Certain villages such as Santa Ines have lost two thirds of their inhabitants.
Negative- Brain Drain
The more skilled, ambitious and educated Mexicans leave resulting in a ‘brain drain’.
Negative- Mexican Workforce
Gaps in the Mexican workforce have to be filled by the elderly, reducing output and affecting the economy.
Negative- Families
Families are split up as predominantly males leave, causing domestic stress and tension.
