immunology Flashcards
reasons for spreading:
-population is bigger
-more crowded
-urbanization
-economic power in larger areas
-transport of materials
-increased drug resistance
-immunization malpractice
what is isolation?
voluntary
what is quarantine?
required
innate system:
-what your born with
-begins in utero
-made of non-specific antibodies
-responds to all pathogens the same
-skin, mucous membranes, stomach acids
acquired system:
-afterbirth (antibodies)
what are the parts of the acquired immune system?
cellular and humoral
cellular immunity:
-cytotoxic T-cells + lymphocytes
-indentify infected cells and target for destruction
what are the antibodies?
-IGG, IGE, IGA, IGD, IGM-only one made when born
-bind to antigens (immunoglobulins)
-globular proteins that make up immunity
what are the parts of acquired immunity?
-antibodies
-made by B-cells
defense against bacteria
how are viruses attacked?
-intracellularly
antibodies neutralize the viral particles
jobs of the immune system (innate):
- prevent entry of pathogens
- prevent colonization
- prevent growth if colonized
jobs of the immune system (acquired):
1.destroy infected cells (cellular)
2.produce antibodes (humoral)
types of prevention?
-food and water safety
-public and personal hygiene
-immunizations
what is engrafting?
a Buddhist practice, scraping body fluid into skin
who scratched small pox into people creating a mild reaction but antibodies?
Mary Montegu
