Immunology 1.1 Flashcards
Lymphocyte recirculation
how cells get into and out of the lymph nodes
What are PALS
Periarteriole lymphoid sheatharea where the T-cells are found in the spleen
what is the follicular network of the spleen?
a place where antigen can hang around so that cells can dress them .
what is in red pulp?
RBCs, macrophages
what is the circulation of the spleen?
in open, filtrates through pulp reticulum. most is openin closed, it goes directly into the sinuses
What is the marginal zone?
area of the spleen that has pathogen recognition abilities
specialized macrophages
can you lose your spleen?
yes, but some microorganisms can gain a stronghold. get an overwhelming post-splenectomy infection.
S. Pneumoniae, N. Meningitidis
Can be years later.
what antibodies does the spleen specifically produce?
IgM
Intestinal M cells
found in gut lumen, forms a dome in lymphoid follicle underneath surface, microfolded surface
how is the spleen different from lymph nodes?
it filters blood of particulate antigen.
the germinal center plays what role in the immune response?
it is the site of interactions between immune cells
what are some differences between innate and adaptive ?
rapid vs slowfixed vs variablelimited number of specifies vs numerousconstant during response vs improve during response
what do the immune response systems have in common?
effector mechanism for destruction of pathogens
what would happen if you lost adaptive, or innate responses?
increase rapidly in number or micros or keep them under control until it overwhelms
comparative evolution of immune response
invertebrates have more innate, vertebrates have more of an adaptive response
