Immune System Flashcards
6 key components of the immune system
White blood cells
Complement system
Lymphatic system
Spleen
Thymus
What are White blood ( leukocytes ) cells responsible for in relation to the immune system
Producing
Phagocytes and Lymphocytes
What do phagocytes do in relation to the immune system
They identify
Engulf
Break down pathogens
What are 2 types of phagocytes and their roles
1.Neutrophils- common/ abundant
- engulf pathogens
- self destructive
- turn info pus
- Marcokytes
- large
- developing antibodies
- future recognition
- destroy pathogens
What do Lymphocytes do?
They produce antibody cells
Which help fight illness
What are the 3 types of lymphocytes and roles
B cells
- produce antibodies and activate T cells
Tcells
- destroy compromised cells
Killer cells
- destroy virus / cancerous cells
What does the lymphatic system do in relation for the immune system
Transport and storage of fluid / lymphocytes/ dead cells around the body via lymph nodes and vessels
What is the spleens role in relation to the immune system
(3)
-Filters blood
-Destroys compromised RBC
-Produces Antibodies cells
B cells / T cells / killer cells (lymphocytes)
What is the bone marrow role in relation to the immune system
Blood cell production cite
What is the thymus role in relation to the immune system
Responsible for maturation of T cells
