Immune System Flashcards
Define the immune system 7
The study of an organisms defense system in health and disease.
What is the immune system composed of?
Organs, cells, molecules.
What is the immune system?
An organised system of organs, cells and molecules that interact together to defend the body against disease.
What are microbes?
Viruses, bacteria, fungi, Protozoa.
Main organs of the immune system?
Tonsils, thymus, spleen 1 bone marrow, lymph nodes.
Role of primary lymphoid organs?
Production of white blood cells lymphocytes
Role ot secondary lymphoid?
Sites where immune responses are initiated.
Role of bone marrow.
Source of stem cells that develop into cells ot the innate and adaptive immune responses.
Role of thymus?
School for white blood cells, called T cells. Developing T cells learn not to react with self.
Role of spleen?
Site of ignition for immune responses against blood-bore pathogens.
Role of lymph nodes?
Located along lymphatic vessels. Lymph fluid from blood and tissue is filtered. Site of imitation of immune responses
What are the 3 layers ot immune defense?
Chemical & physical barriers
Innate arm
Adaptive arm
Physical barriers that prevent pathogen entry.
Epidermis- dead cells, keratin and phagacytic immune cells.
Dermis- thick layer of connective tissue, collagen and blood vessels and phagocytes immune cells.
Chemical barriers that prevent pathogen entry?
Antimicrabial peptides
Lysosomes
Sebum
Salt: hypertonic
Location at mucosal membranes?
Lining parts of the body that lead to the outside and are exposed to air.
