measures of Cerebral Blood Flow
PET, MR, Doppler
measures of metabolism
PET, MR, Spectroscopy
measures of level of oxygenated OxyHb/ deoxygenated DeoxyHb
fMRI
Quantitative anatomical brain data can be combined with
measures of “function”
Cognitive functions
psychological characteristics
motor abilities
sensor abilities
What are lesions studies
Examine the effect of a damage to a certain region of the brain.
What is the biological basis of the BOLD signal
coupling between neuronal activity and local blood flow.
Increased neuronal
stimulation leads to a local increase in blood flow. Brain activity leads to increased blood flow to certain parts of the brain
BOLD is a MRI technique sensitive to local differences in oxygenate hemoglobin versus deoxygenatedhemoglobin
Oxygenated Hb
Is diamagnetic.
Does not influence the magnetic field
Deoxygenated Hb
is Paramagnetic
disturbs the magnetic field, leading to signal loss
GOAL of fMRI research
- To design an experiment that isolates different cognitive operations and their success
