Idiographic And Nomathetic Apprach Flashcards
1
Q
Idiographic
A
- To describe the nature of individuals behaviours and their subjective experiences
- No concern to compare these to other people
2
Q
What sort of research methods are associated with idiographic
A
- Qualities data
- Case studies
- Unstructured interviews
- Self-report
- to describe the rich detail of human experience
3
Q
Nomatetic
A
- General laws about human behaviour to provide a benchmark to be compared to
- Universally applied
- Scientific research methods which typically involve a large number of people
4
Q
Examples of ideographic
A
- Humanist only interested in the unique individual experience
- Psychodynamic case study’s are ideographic but then his conclusions with universally applied
5
Q
Examples of nomothetic
A
- The more reductionist approaches
- Behaviourist, cognitive and biological all make sure of massive samples to be analysed for statistical significance
- This produced universal principles to be be applied to all
6
Q
Case for idiographic
A
- Provides a complete and comprehensive account of individual experiences
- Compliments nomothetic by shedding light on areas it rejects
7
Q
Against ideographic
A
- Very narrow restriction of work
- Cannot generalise findings as Freud did with Little Hans and the Oedipus complex
- Research methods employed also tent to be more subjective and open to bias
8
Q
Cause for nomothetic
A
- Scientific research using standardised procedures, statistical analysis and high control
- Allows the scientific study of what is ‘normal’ and thus what is abnormal
9
Q
Case against nomothetic
A
- Can lose meaning as focus is not on people
- For instance, knowing a 1% risk of SZ does not tell us what it is like
- In lab studies many aspects and influences overlooked
- Cause and effect so that is kind of the point
10
Q
Complementary rather than contradictory
A
- Can look at cases such as Clive wearing (ideo)
- But also look at capacity and duration in many
- Goal of psychology to describe in detail human behaviour but to illustrate it through a framework with nomothetic / universal laws
