Free Will And Determinism Flashcards
1
Q
Describe free will
A
- Entirely self-determining and free to chose own actions and thoughts
- Does not ignore other influences but says we can reject these forces
2
Q
Describe hard determinism
A
- All behaviour has a cause
- Scientific view as ‘cause and effect’
- Internal or external force
3
Q
Describe soft determinism
A
- Cog approach
2. Although restricted by causal factors, we play a meditating role in what we chose
4
Q
Describe biological determinism
A
- We can not control our physiology
- Such as fight or flight reflex
- Lots of conditions have genetic basis
- Does recognise mediating element of environment of biological structures
5
Q
Describe environmental determinism
A
- Free will an illusion
2. Sum of past conditioning and reinforcement history
6
Q
Describe psychic determinism
A
- Biological drives and instincts
- Behaviour controlled by unconscious conflicts and suppressed memories
- Even slips of the tung
7
Q
Argument for determinism
A
- Consistent with aim of science to establish cause
- Led to drug treatments by isolating causal factor
- Mental illness prove not free will as no one would choose to have
8
Q
Case against determinism
A
- Not consistent with legal system
2. Basic idea all behaviour must have a cause even if not found yet is unfalsifiable
9
Q
Case for free will
A
- Every day we seem to exercise free will so face validity
- Those with high internal LOC at lower risk of depression than those with external LOC
- Feeling of free will at least impacts mind and behaviour
10
Q
Case against free will
A
- Brain knows if it will press left or right button 10 seconds before we are aware
- Basic process determined by the brain before we are aware
11
Q
Internationalist approach
A
- Most compressive image
2. Such as SLT with soft determinism
