Holism And Reductionism Flashcards
1
Q
Describe holism
A
- Should not break up behaviour and and experience and instead Analyse the person or behaviour as a whole
- Linked to humanist approach
2
Q
Describe reductionism
A
Breaks down behaviour into constituent parts to the lowest level of explanation
3
Q
What are 5 levels of explanation
A
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Psychology
- Sociology
4
Q
Describe biological reductionism
A
- All behaviour can be explained at a physiological level
2. Sucsessfily applied through drugs
5
Q
Environmental reductionism
A
- Break all behaviour into stimulus-response
2. Only obervseable behaviour in a lab
6
Q
Case for holism
A
- Social aspects of behaviour only emerge within a group context
- Such as research into conformity
7
Q
Case against holism
A
- Often untestable and lacks impiricle evidence
- Such as humanist approach
- Higher levels of explanation that combine many influences it is hard to establish and study the most important
- Therefore little application of findings
8
Q
Case for reductionism
A
- Forms basis of operationalisation
- Allows for cause effect to be isolated
- Much better scientific credibility
9
Q
Case against reductionism
A
- Oversimplifies complex phenomena causing a loss of validity
- Such as genetic explanations of depression ignore social influences
- So can only form part of the explaintions
10
Q
Interactionalist approach
A
Considers all levels of expliantions
Such as diathesis stress
