Dominant identity
What are the 2 types of master statuses?
- Envisaged by the individual (what you feel is most important)
- Imposed on the individual by others
E.g. An imposed master status may be that Alex has a disability while Alex may perceive himself as an athlete
What is the medical definition of self disclosure?
The process by which one person lets his or her inner being, thoughts and emotions be known to another. It is important for psychological growth in individual and group psychotherapy
What are the 5 factors that influence self-disclosure?
- Reciprocity – the more we disclose to someone, the more information they are likely to give to us
- Norms – the situation determines how much / what kind of information we disclose
- Trust – The more we trust someone the more we might disclose
- Quality of Relationship – ‘Social penetration theory’ suggests the more socially intimate we are, the greater range of topics we will discuss
- Gender – Females disclose more than males
Regarding self-disclosure, what do western societies value?
Individualism –> promoting self-reliance and personal goals above the collective goals of the social group
Regarding self-disclosure, what do eastern societies traditionally value?
Collectivism –> promoting interdependence and social group goals above those of personal goals
What is self-disclosure?
An interaction between 2 individuals which one intends to deliberately divulge something personal
What is the ‘social penetration theory’?
Suggests the more socially intimate we are, the greater range of topics we will discuss
