Q

Whats the difference between Leadership Styles:
1. Democratic
2. Servant Leadership

A
  1. Democratic: Involves team members in decision-making.
    * Encourages collaboration and open communication.
    * Focuses on building consensus, with the leader still having the final say.
    * This style works well when the team is experienced and capable of contributing to decisions.
    * CONS: democratic leadership may not always fit in high-pressure situations requiring immediate decisions, such as in crises or projects that lack structure.
  2. Servant Leadership:
    * Focuses on empowering the team by putting their needs first and helping them develop.
    * A servant leader acts as a facilitator, coach, and supporter rather than an authoritative figure.
    * They foster collaboration and trust, which aligns with some elements of democratic leadership.
    * Unlike democratic leaders, who emphasize decision-making participation, servant leaders emphasize personal and professional growth of the team members.

Key Not: Democratic is consensus based decisions, but not ideal for high pressure situations that require immediate action.

Q

When is it ok to take Directive Leadership Style?

A

Scenarios where clear guidance, fast decision making, and strict control are needed.
1. Crisis Situations: When quick decisiosn are required and project facing severe problem(6 month delay), budget overun, risk of failure.
* Team needs clear, decisive action to mitigate risks or respond to unforeseen challenges leaving little room for collabing or input.
2. Low Team Experience or Maturity: Team inexperienced or lacks expertise, or new to project environment.
* Team not familiar w/ their roles, and require step-by-step instruction to stay on track.
3. Lack of Defined Roles and Responsibilities:
* In Situation where roles/Resps are unclear or not been established, direct approach can help define who does what and create structure.
* Prevents confusion, reduces rework, ensures accountability.
* Example: A chaotic team environment where everyone is trying to do everything without clear ownership of tasks, resulting in inefficiency and mistakes.

Summary
* Directive leadership is useful in situations where control, clarity, and quick decision-making are crucial, such as crises, low-maturity teams, undefined roles, or high-risk environments. * Servant leadership, on the other hand, is more effective in empowering teams, fostering collaboration, and supporting growth. The key is knowing when to switch styles based on the project’s needs and team’s capabilities.

Q

Example of upholding Compliance Ideal PM

If team member on contract leaves team in middle of project What should PMs first action be?

B. Determine what remaining packages might be affected and ensure that adequate resources are available.
C. Confirm the terms of the team member’s contract to close their participation appropriately.

A

B.Determine what remaining packages might be affected and ensure that adequate resources are available.
C.Confirm the terms of the team member’s contract to close their participation appropriately.

The first step the project manager should take to ensure a smooth transition and minimize any disruption to the project.
It is important to understand the terms of the contract, such as the notice period and any outstanding deliverables, to determine the appropriate course of action.

Ideal PM addresses compliance(Legal contract) first, to have better understanding of situation before proceeding to try and figure out what to do with resource management.
