Ice and Rain Protection Flashcards
How many boot cycles are there?
3;
- Fast
- Slow
- Manual
How long does each boot cycle for in automatic mode?
In SLOW mode, all six boot sets are inflated and deflated automatically. The entire cycle takes 3 minutes.
In FAST mode, all six boot sets are inflated and deflated automatically. The entire cycle takes 1 minute.
How long is the dwell time during automatic mode on fast and slow?
- FAST: 24sec
- SLOW: 144 sec (2min 24sec)
What does the manual mode selection do?
- Allows the boots to cycled manually in case a leak develops in the de-Icing boot system.
- It provides continuous activation of the DDV heater elements ( to prevent them from freezing)
- The AIRFRAME MANUAL SELECT switch is rotated clockwise through each of the six detent positions.
- the switch should be left in each detent position until the corresponding set of de-Icing boot indicator lights illuminate. Then switch to the next position, each set of boots will remain illuminated as long as the switch stays in the set position. After the 6 boot sets have been inflated, a minimum dwell time of 24sec should be observed before doing it again.
Will the manual rotary selector work if not in manual mode?
Yes
How long does each boot inflate for in manual mode?
As long as the switch remains in the selected boot detent.
What is the indication of a leak in the pneumatic de-ice system?
- illumination of the DEICE PRESS caution light
- de-Icing pressure gauge showing a lower psi (normally 18psi)
- No illumination of the green boot inflation light of the faulty boot on the ice protection panel aircraft graphic. (They illuminate when the hold approx 15.5 psi)
When do the ice detection probes give an ICE DETECTED message?
When ice accumulates on the probes.
The probes continuously vibrate at a natural resonant frequency, but when ice accumulated on the probe, the vibration frequency increases due to an increase in rigidity.
How are the AOA vanes heated?
The Left/Right AOA vane heater elements are automatically heated.
- Left 115-volt Variable AC Bus powers the left AOA
- Right 115-volt Variable AC Bus powers the right AOA
When do the pitot heat caution lights illuminate?
- failure of the pitot/static probe heater element
- Probe heater power source isn’t available
- failure of the crew to select the heater ON
What does the INCREASE REF speed switch do?
- (INCREASE REF SPEED) shown on ED
- Stall Protection System (SPS) adjusts stall margin for Icing conditions. (Red tape)
What is the minimum oil temperature required for adequate inlet splitter de-Icing?
65 degrees celsius
What powers the propeller heat?
- Power is supplied to the blade heating elements by the related AC Bus. (i.e. the left/Right 115 volt Variable AC Bus)
What conditions must be met for the engine intake adapter heaters to turn on?
The intake heaters automatically activate under the following conditions:
- Engine intake bypass door is open AND
- Engine is running (oil pressure sensor) AND
- SAT is below approx 15 C (temperature sensor) AND
- 115-volt variable AC power is available
What is the indication if one of the intake adapter heater coils fail?
If the primary heater fails the secondary heater will energize. There is no indication in the flight compartment to show which heater is operating.
If both the primary and secondary fail, the related ENG ADPT 1 or 2 caution light comes on. If only one heater fails, the caution light will not come on, but the fault will be recorded in the CDS, for maintenance.
