Class: Carbohydrate; Hypertonic solution
MOA: provides the lacking form of carbohydrate, dextrose, in the emergency care of a hypoglycemic patient

Indications:
Side Effects:
Indications: Hypoglycemia; coma or seizure of unknown origin
Side Effects: Hyperglycemia; phlebitis

Contraindications:
Considerations:
Contraindications: Intracranial bleeding; increased intracranial pressure
Considerations: Check blood glucose levels prior to administration; must be administered through a patent IV to prevent tissue necrosis; may precipitate neurological symptoms in chronic alcoholic, or malnourished patients

Dose Adult: 12.5-25 g slow IVP
Dose Pediatric: .5-1g/kg slow IVP (D25)
Onset: 1 minute
Duration: Dependent on glucose levels

Class: Carbohydrate; hypertonic solution
MOA: Provides the lacking form of carbohydrate, dextrose, in the emergency care of a hypoglycemic patient

Indications:
Side Effects:
Indications: Symptomatic hypoglycemia, cardiac arrest (newly born with heart rate < 60) or altered mental ion with glucose level < 50
Side Effects: Patients may complain of warmth, pain, or burning at the injection site
