Hypoglycemia Flashcards
Diagnostic criteria of Hypoglycemia
WHIPPLE’S TRIAD
• Low plasma glucose ≤60 mg/dL
• Symptoms consistent with hypogylcemia (assoc. with the symptoms of CNS)
• Relief of symptoms if plasma glucose is raised
o Affects also the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
o Predominantly found in px with_ hypoglycemia (occurs _ after meal)
NEUROGENIC
reactive; 4 hours
NEUROGENIC includes
Tremor
Palpitations
Anxiety
Diaphoresis
NEUROGLYCOPENIC includes
Dizziness
Tingling
Blurred vision
Confusion
Behavioral change
o Dec glucose supplies in the brain = impaired brain function
o Occurs when glucose level is <_
o Occurs in _ hypoglycemia (after _ of no food intake)
40mg/dL;
fasting;
10 hours
NV (FBS):
70 - 99 mg/dL
Hyperglycemic hormones are released into the circulation (to promote the inc BG)
65 - 70 mg/dL
• Strongly suggests hypoglycemia (still need to follow whipple’s triad)
• Found in multiple/series glucose testing
equal or <60 mg/dL
Observable symptoms of hypoglycemia appears
55 mg/dL
Impairment of cerebral function begins
50 mg/dL
alcohol consumption can cause:
inhibition of _ ;
increase _
hepatic gluconeogenesis;
glycogen phosphorylase activity
HYPOGLYCEMIA Causes
AACES
Alimentary Hypoglycemia (reactive hypoglycemia)
Alcohol consumption
Cortisol & Growth Hormone Deficiencies
End Stage Renal Dx
Severe Sepsis
enzyme involved in glycogenesis→glucose is converted to glycogen
glycogen phosphorylase
