Hyperglycemia Flashcards
HYPERGLYCEMIA
toxic to _
Hyperglycemic Value:
beta-cell function
> 99 mg/dL
HYPERGLYCEMIA GENERAL LABORATORY FINDINGS
1.high urine & serume glucose
2. high SG
3. ketones in urine & serum (DM type 1 associated)
4. low blood and urine pH (acidosis)
5. electrolyte imbalance
- low Na+
- low HC03
- high k+
group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin receptors or both
DM
DM has:
FBS of >126 mg/dL
Glucosuria
Ketosis
Renal threshold for glucose
160-180 mg/dL
Normal ratio of B-hydroxybutyrate to acetoacetate = _
* Severe DM – the ratio can reach _
o Can easily go back to 1: 1 by _
1:1
severe: 6:1
by insulin administration
General Signs & Symptoms of Hyperglycemia
Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia (3 P’s)
RAPID WEIGHT LOSS
HYPERVENTILATION
MENTAL CONFUSION AND POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
increase urination bc of polydipsia
polyuria
excessive water intake
polydipsia
has HIGH osmolality of the blood
and HIGH BG → the promotion of thirst
POLYDIPSIA
– body can’t metabolize glucose so it finds other
source of energy, making you hungry. High BG but is not used
polyphagia
