What is the definition of leadership style?
Ways that managers communicate with employees to inspire/motivate them to work to achieve an organisation’s goals.
What is autocratic leadership?
Managers make decisions without input from staff - works well with unskilled/inexperienced workers.
What is participative leadership?
A more consultative approach - employees have higher involvement in decision making.
What is a contingency leadership style?
Management approach chosen to best suit the situation with the HR available.
What is job design?
The number, kind and variety of tasks that employees expected to carry out.
What are specific tasks in job design?
Uses scientific management approach to match workers skills to the ‘one best approach’ of completing the task.
What are general tasks in job design?
A range of tasks to improve motivation and worker satisfaction.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for internal recruitment?
A: employees know the culture/operations + cheaper than external recruitment.
D: lead to rivalry for positions + no new skills added.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of external recruitment?
A: New ideas and skills + equal employment opportunity.
D: lost productivity in initial phases + may not fit culture.
What is developmental performance management?
Improves individual performance through establishing objectives such as reaching sales targets.
What is administrative performance management?
Assesses business progress in meeting goals and identifying areas for improvement.
What is remuneration?
The financial and non-financial benefits that employees receive.
What are the monetary rewards?
Direct: pay increase, allowances, bonus etc.
Indirect: holidays, flexible work, superannuation.
What is gainsharing?
Rewarding employees for making suggestions to improve productivity - savings from these are distributed.
What is profitsharing?
Percentage of profits offered to employees.
What are the non-monetary rewards?
Job: interesting work, recognition.
Environment: open communication, career security.
What is a subsidary?
Company that is owned by another company and located in another country.
Global Strategies: skills and supply.
Australia has skills shortages in many industries - business can use visas to bring in skilful overseas staff on contracts (usually 4 years).
What is negotiation?
Discussions between the parties result in a compromise.
What is mediation?
Confidential discussion in a non-threatening environment with a neutral third party.
What is conciliation?
When disputes have not been resolved, it may be referred to a conciliation member.
What is arbitration?
When conciliation fails - third party makes a legally binding decision to resolve dispute.
