In the acquisition process, what is recruitment and selection?
Recruitment: locating/attracting the right quantity/quality of staff at the right cost.
Selection: gathering information about each applicant to choose the most appropriate applicant.
What is the aim of development?
Enhancing the skills of the employee.
What is induction and its benefits?
Introduces a new employee to the job and the business culture - it builds confidence and creates a positive attitude to the job.
What is the aim of training?
Seek a long-term change in employees’ skills and knowledge.
What are the benefits of training for employees and employers?
Business: higher productivity, reduced costs - less labour turnover.
Employees: opportunity for promotion, improved job satisfaction.
What are the 5 steps in training?
1: Assess the needs of the individual, jobs, business.
2: Determine objectives of the training program.
3: Consider the internal and external influences.
4: Determine the process - content of training etc.
5: Evaluate the training program.
What is job enlargement and job rotation?
Enlargement: increasing the breadth of tasks in a job.
Rotation: moving staff from one task to another over a period of time.
What is job enrichment and job sharing?
Enrichment: increasing the responsibilities of a staff member.
Sharing: where two people share the same job.
Maintenance: communication example.
Regular team meetings, social functions etc
How does employee participation through ownership maintain HR?
Employees buy shares in their company - result in increased commitment.
What is retirement and resignation?
Retirement: when an employee decides to give up full-time work.
Resignation: employee leaves their jobs - need for change or moving interstate.
What is the difference between voluntary redundancy and retrenchment?
Redundancy is when a job no longer exists while retrenchment is where there is not enough work to justify employment.
What is the difference between instant dismissal and unfair dismissal?
Instant: immediate termination of contract without notice due to serious misconduct.
Unfair: when the action is harsh or unreasonable.
