What is HR planning involving?
Human resource audit – this resources the business has enough employees with the required skills and qualifications to fill out vacancies
Estimated labour turnover – this is the rate of which employees leave the business
Create a HR plan – ensuring the firm always has required numbers of employee employees
What does HR planning refer to in general?
It looks at employees and the amount they have and expect to have in the future
What is the second function of a HR manager and what does it involve?
It is recruitment
A HR manager after doing a human resource audit may identify areas in the business which need additional employees
What are the elements of recruitment in the selection process?
Jobs description – it said the purpose of a job where the job fits into the organisation structure, main responsibilities and who to report to and pay
Personal specification – outline skills, characteristics, qualifications and experience needed to fill the role. Makes a recruitment selection process easier.
Interview – it asks draw related questions to assess their suitability
What would be a good form of interviewing?
A panel interview – it involves the candidate and a number of interviewees which reduces bias and ensures. The most suitable candidate is chosen.
What is internal selection?
It is using internal communication system for vacancy using existing employees. It can be done through promotion or redemployment
What are the benefits of internal selection?
There is less disruption in the business
Employees are familiar with the culture
There is no need for induction training, so costs to reduce
Motivation increases as other employees see that there are promotional opportunities
What are the drawbacks of internal recruitment?
The best person may not be an internal candidate which may need to industrial relations issues
What is external recruitment?
 it is when employees are recruited from outside the business using an advertising or recruitment agency
What are the benefits of external recruitment?
It may bring new skills and expertise to the business
New ideas can be brought
Training cost avoided if the recruit has the required skills
What are the drawbacks of external recruitment?
There may be a drop in efficiency as the new recruit gets used to the culture in the business
There may be a drop of motivation for employees as they don’t see any promotion

Training and development
One’s employees are within the business they need to be trained to ensure that they have the right skills
What is the difference between development and training?
 training focuses on teaching staff how to do one job
Development takes more long-term approach to help employees develop multiple skills that can be used in different job jobs

Induction

Off the job training
What is induction training?
It is carried out when employee starts a new job. It helps them to make them fully productive as quickly as possible.
What is it on the job training and its benefits and drawbacks?
It is when training takes place within the workplace and it can be such things as shadowing or job rotation
Benefits – cheaper quicker higher productivity
Drawbacks – pick up bad habits from others, poor training quality, employees existing may not be comfortable training new people
What does after the job training involve and its benefits and drawbacks?
It is training outside of the workplace, e.g. attending lectures and courses
Benefits – quality training, new ideas, networking opportunities
Drawbacks – cost of course can be expensive, dropping in productivity as lower staff during the day

What are the types of financial rewards?
Basic salary – employees received a fixed monthly or weekly amount
Piece rate – employee is rewarded per item produced/made
Employee share purchase plan – employees can buy shares in the business at a discounted price
Time rate that employee is rewarded a fixed amount per hour
Bonus – this is an extra payment received by an employee for reaching a target or at specific times of the year
Commission – employees receive a percentage of what they sell
Employee profit sharing – they receive percentage of profits by the business. Motivates the employees to increase the profit by reducing costs and increasing output.
What are some types of non-financial rewards?
Job sharing – employees share a position so they can split the job between them improving the worklife balance
Promotion – movement to a more senior position position
Flexitime – this allows employees the freedom to choose their own work hours within an agreed timeframe
Benefits in kind– it takes a form of goods or services given to employees rather than money
What is an example of a benefit in kind?
Meal vouchers.company cars.health insurance
What is a performance appraisal?
It is a review of the performance of the employee and is usually carried out by the employees direct manager or HR managers. It can be used to pinpoint training needs rewards and provide necessary or rewards or training.
Why are my management carry out but a performance appraisal?
Review progress of employee to help determine the appropriate reward
Goals can be set for the future
Employees can get suitable feedback
Management can get feedback from employees and what needs to be improved
