Human Influences in the Environment Flashcards
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?
It combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells preventing them from carrying oxygen
What causes acid rain?
1) Burning fossil fuels releases harmful gases like sulphur dioxide
2) The sulphur dioxide comes from sulphur impurities in the fossil fuels
3) When this gas mixes with rain clouds it forms dilute sulphuric acid
4) This then falls as acid rain
What does acid rain do to the environment?
It can kill fishes and trees
What are the main gases human activity produces?
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Nitrous oxide
CFCs
What is eutrophication?
1) Fertilisers enter the water, adding extra nutrients
2) The extra nutrients causes an algal bloom to grow fast and block out the light
3) Plants cant photosynthesis due to the lack of light and die
4)With more food available microorganisms feed and increase in number depleting the oxygen in the water
5) Organisms that need oxygen die
What four things affect the carbon cycle?
Leaching
Disturbing the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen
Soil erosion
Disturbing Evo transpiration
