Cycles in the Enviroment Flashcards
What are the stages in the carbon cycle?
1) Plants collect CO2
2) Animals eating plants
3) Respiration releases CO2
4) Animals and plants decompose by microorganisms called decomposers releasing CO2
5) When plant and animal products are burnt through combustion CO2 is released back into the air
6) Decomposition means that habitats can be maintained
What are the four types of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?
Decomposers
Nitrifying bacteria
Nitrogen-fixing bacteria
Denitrifying bacteria
What does a decomposer do?
Breaks down proteins in plants and animals and urea and turns them into ammonia. Forms ammonium ions in the soil
What does nitrifying bacteria do?
Turns ammonium ions in decaying matter into nitrates
What does nitrogen-fixing bacteria do?
Turns atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen compounds that plants can use
What does denitrifying bacteria do?
Turns nitrates back into atmospheric nitrogen gas.. Has no benefits to living organisms
