why is bonding important for a newborn baby
- the baby is helpless and needs protection and care
- without bond, parents may not meet all the babys needs
how does bonding happen?
before birth - movement, seeing the ultrasound
immeadietley after birth - skin to skin contact (releases oxytinin hormone), looking at baby, touch, smell
ongoing - caring for the baby, eye contact, rocking the baby to sleep
reasons why bonding may be difficult or longer to happen
birthing difficultys (recovering from c section or couldnt see baby right after birth)
premature - needs intensive care
adoption
post natal depression or other mental health issues
stress and worry
parents own experiences of family
why is it important to form secure attachments in infancy and childhood?
- the attachment (or not) influences how the baby will respond to stress, learn behaviour, form relationships and cope in social situations
- without a secure attachment, emotional development can be negitivley affected
what are the ingredients for a secure attachments
trust - knows they can rely on carer to meet their needs
sense of security - a child feels safe and able to express emotions, knows the care giver wont leave them
consistant care - their need are met all of the time
parenting to encourage a secure attachment

- playing with them
- spending time with them
- understanding the childs emotion
