income defenition
the money comming into a household; usually from wages, pension, state benefits
savings defenition
surplus money - when a person has more money than they need to meet all their commitments and are able to put some of it away

people have to pay for some services to live: rent/mortgage, council tax, gas, electricity, water rates, transport costs

money borrowed and owed
loans for things such as a house or car

- lacking mimimum income
- cannot pay for food, fuel, housing
- 19% of the UK are in absolite poverty
- this is relieved by benefits
relative poverty
- a household income of less than 60% of the median income
- 21% of the uk are in relative poverty
social exclusion
being isolated - lacking rights, benefits and resources normally available to members of society
educational oppertunuties
above minimum income standard:
- private school - fewer in class so more personall attention, live in area with a good school
- more oppertunuties
below minimum income standard:
- live in a deprived area
- less oppertunuties
- cant afford equipment
leisure oppertunuties
above minimum income standard:
- afford to do more - hobbies, holidays, days out
- gym membership
below minimum income standard:
- cant afford to do stuff - cinema, holidays, hobbies
- strain at christmass
- can lead to crime and anti social behaviour
diet and nutrition

- can afford fruit, veg - variety
- can afford to eat out
below minimum income standard
- survive off cheap food - less nutritional value, lowers immune system
housing conditions
above minimum income standard:
- warm, clean, spacious
- safe neighbourhood
below minimum income standard:
- draughty, cold, crowded
- dangerous neighbourhood
health
above minimum income standard:
- better health choices, better diet
- less stress and worry about money
below minimum income standard:
- poorer health choices - lower immune system
- higher rates of smoking, drinking gambling
- more financial pressure
possible effects of poverty
- babies born in poverty tend to weigh less
- more likely to suffer from chronic illnes
- 3x more likely to develop mental health problems
- more likely to experience social isolation
- more likely to have diet related problems
