Human Anatomy Flashcards
How many bones are in the human skeleton?
206
What is cartilage?
Located at the ends of bones and is made up of durable protein fibers. Forms smooth surfaces like the knee’s bones for bone movement next to each other Protects the surfaces of bones in mobile joints
What are ligaments?
Made of protein fibers and connect bones
What is the skeletal system consisted of?
Bones, Cartilage and ligaments
What are the main functions of bones?
Support the body against gravity
Protect vital, soft organs
Movement
Making blood cells
Storage of calcium and phosphorous
What 2 types of bones make up the body?
Compact- the dense outer layer of the bones
Spongey- Bone center, lighter
What is the white coating that makes up bones?
Tough, smooth, and white coating called periosteum.
What is bone marrow?
Soft connective tissue that is in spongy bone that make blood cells
What are the three types of joints in the body?
Fixed joint no movement like the skull
Partial movement- little movement like joints in between vertebrae
Movable-movement, toes, elbows, knees, thumbs hips
4 types of Movable joints
Ball and socket bone fits inside the ball and the cup shape of another hip and shoulder
Hinge joint ends of bones are shaped so that you can go forward and backward
Pivot joints-rotational movement only- palm of hand down
Gliding-slip bone over the other and very small side to side movements ankles
