Howard - Answers Flashcards
HOSTILITY - angry is not funny - too harsh - manageable emotions are funny: pet peeves, irritations, annoyances - stuff we can live with and laugh at - anger is too dangerous - too personal - too difficult to laugh through anger - much too serious - changes / kills the laughter in the room - audience came for laughs, not a lecture or therapy session
HUMOR / POETRY - Howard agrees with Haiku poem metaphor - every word counts in both art forms
EVANGELISM - bring audience to your world view - start easy - agreeable point of view - then gain additional agreements - at a certain point the audience is totally committed - or - they have to contradict themselves - you see this in politics too
WORLD VIEW - need one to be an evangelist - make it simple and flexible - becomes platform for pet peeves
WRITING versus EDITING - truly different mindsets - they don’t play well together - implication - don’t define editing as writing
DAILY WRITING TIME - broad definition / not only stream of conscious / it’s up to me - just keep writing time sacred - keep writing time intentional - funny, funny, funny
