Operational definitions:
A definition that is very specific so that the operation is repeatable.
Confirmation bias:
When doing a study one that tends to look for what they believe.
Case study:
A detailed study of a person based off careful observations or psych testing.
Pros: produces a detailed description of an individual.
Cons: missing info, unreliable, usually rare cases.
Observational Study:
Observes measures and records behavior, talking care to avoid intruding on people. (Freshman study)
Pros: natural environment
Cons: cannot control subjects
Laboratory Study:
Observations done in a laboratory.
Pros: controlled environment, equipment
Cons: people act differently, explaining behavior
Psychological Tests:
Procedures for measuring and evaluating personality, emotions, aptitude, interest.
Objective tests:
Tests on knowledge oh consciously know, reliable and valid
Projective tests:
Reveal the unconscious thoughts not reliable or valid
Validity:
Tests on what it is suppose to.
Content: every questions asks what it’s meant to.
Criterion: predictive of how well you will do in the future.
Experiment:
Show cause and effect; allows the teacher to control or manipulate the situation
Independent variable:
What the experimenter changes or manipulates
Dependent variable:
Results or prediction
Experimental group:
Group that is tested on
Control condition/ group:
The compared condition
Random assignment:
After the ransom sample space; determines who are in the different groups.
