How pollination occurs Flashcards
what kind of fertilisation process is Angiosperm fertilisation
adouble fertilisationprocess
what does double fertilisation require
two sperm cellsandtwoegg cells.
what will the different sperm and egg cells do
hefirstsperm cell will fertiliseoneof the egg cells to form azygote, while thesecondsperm cell will fertilise asecondegg cell (referred to as apolar body) to form theendosperm
What are the steps of fertilisation
- pollen grains land on the mature stigma
- the pollen produces a pollen tube
- The pollen tube starts to grow from the stigma and down the style
- transportation of the two male sex cells (gametes) to the ovules
- one of the male sex cells fertilises the female sex cell inside a small structure inside the ovule called theembryo sac
- the fertilised egg develops into a seed.
- The other male sex cell joins another female sex cell (a polar body) in the embryo sac to form the endosperm
- The ovary then starts to swell and enlarge and becomes a fruit
what are the different ways for pollination to occur
- Thetransfer of pollen to thestigmain thesame flower.
- Thetransfer of pollenfrom one flower to the stigmainanother floweron thesame plant.
- Thetransfer of pollenfrom one flower to the stigmainanother floweron adifferent plant, but still of the same species.
what is self-pollination
self-pollinationoccurs when the pollen from the anther is deposited on the stigma of thesame flower oranother floweron thesame plant
what is cross-pollination
Cross-pollinationisthe transfer of pollen from the anther ofone flowertothestigma ofanother floweronadifferent individualof thesame species.
what does self-pollination and cross-pollination look like on a diagram
