How does the Flounder survive in New England? Part 2 Flashcards
What is the most critical molecule for life on Earth?
Water (H2O)
What are the properties of Water?
Small in size
A Polar molecule
Forms hydrogen bonds
Bent Shape increases Polarity
What is a result of water’s polarity?
Wach water molecule attracts other water molecules and other polar molecules and ions
What are the 3 States of Water?
Liquid
Gas
Solid
What happens during the Liquid state?
Hydrogen bonds are constantly made and broken and made as they slide past each other
What happens during the Gas state?
Gas forms when water is heated increasing kinetic energy thus cause hydrogen bonds to break and water molecules to escape as vapor/steam
What happens during Solid state?
Temperature reduces and water freezes creating a crystalline structure maintained by hydrogen bonding which makes water a solid form, less dense and expanding
How does the Flounder Survive?
Due to the insulating ice layer caused by floating ice and also the Anti-Freeze proteins they have to stop crystallization of the water within them
What makes Water’s Heat Capacity High?
Specific Heat Capacity
What is Specific Heat Capacity?
The quantity of heat needed to raise the temperature per unit mass (which is 1 calorie for water)
What is the equation of Specific Heat Capacity?
High Polarity=Increased Hydrogen bonds thus More energy to change the temperature.
What is Heat of Vaporization?
The amount of energy required to change one gram of liquid substance to a gas
What happens through Vaporization?
Evaporation; which cools the body down
What is a Solute?
Molecules being dissolved
What is a Solvent?
The liquid that the solute is being dissolved in
