Horse stifle Flashcards
What is the best view to see the lateral trochlea of the femur and the medial femoral condyle?
Craniomedial caudolateral
Where is the most common spot for OCD in the stifle?
Lateral trochlea of the femur - middle 1/3
What is the most common spot for Cyst-like lesions in the stifle?
Medial condyle
Cyst-like lesions are caused by four things… what are they?
OCD
Ischemia
Infection
Trauma
Where are infectious cyst-like lesions commonly seen?
Caudal aspect of the medial condyle
What are less common areas for OCD in the stifle?
Medial femoral trochlea
Petella - commonly seen with severe trochlear lesions
Where are the most common petellar fractures?
Medial side
Where are most cyst-like lesions in the patella noted?
Medial side - probably due to the fact that this is where the fractures are most common and fractures can cause cyst-like lesions
When should you screen for the OCD in a horse?
After 12-18 months because many can resolve
Patellar fragmentation is commonly assoicated with horses that have under gone what?
Horses that have undergone medial patellar desmotomy
A medial desmotomy can cause what change to the patella?
Increased angle between the proximal articular surface of the patella and the femur
What is the only radiographic sign that may be seen with upward patellar fixation?
Remodeling of the apex of the patella
Patellar luxation is commonly which way in a horse?
Lateral
Patellar luxation in a horse can be bilateral?
Yes commonly is
What breed of horse commonly gets patellar luxation?
Miniature breeds and ponies
What is the best position for ultrasounding the condyles when looking for cyst-like lesions?
flexed
Caudally located cyst-like lesions are commonly associated with?
Septic origin.
What side of the stifle joint is more commonly affected by DJD?
lateral compartment
What is the most common radiographic sign associated with DJD in the stifle?
Osteophytes along the tibial and femoral margins
- Most commonly along the medial margin of the femur
Narrowing of the femorotibial joint space is a sign of what?
Meniscal prolapse
What is the most common radiographic sign associated wtih meniscal damage?
New bone formation cranial to the medial intercondylar eminence of the tibia
If swelling in the stifle or if lameness is localized to the stifle, and radiographs are normal what is the most common cause for the lameness in the horse?
Meniscal injury.
Fractures of the medial intercondylar eminence is commonly assoicated with what?
Cranial cruciate ligament damage
Fractures of the tibia are most commonly located in the?
Proximal tibia
Fracatures involving the caudal aspect of the proximal tibia are commonly associated with?
Cruciate ligament damage and often at the insertion
What side do proximal tibia fractures commonly start at?
lateral aspect
What are the three most common radiographic finding of a stress fracture?
Periosteal bony proliferation
Thickening of the cortical bone
Remodeling of the adjacent cancellous bone.
Where does calcinosis circumscripta commonly occur?
Lateral aspect of the stifle close to the extensor fossa
Calcinosis circumscripta is commonly unilateral or bilateral?
Bilateral
What joints are most commonly affect in foals with hematogenous osteomyelitis?
Femoropatellar joint
Femorotibial joint
Bony involvement from septic arthritis is commonly seen uniaxial in the femorotibial joint and commonly affects which side?
Medial
