Homeostasis 9.5a Flashcards
Main functions of the Excretory System
- excretion of metabolic wastes like urea, ammonia, uric acid
- maintain salt/water balance, linked to blood pressure. Kidneys maintain ions like potassium, and calcium
- maintain acid/base balance by secreting H+ and reabsprbing HCO3-
- Secretion of hormones like calcitriol, erythropoietin, and renin
Calcitriol
Vitamin D
Erythropoietin
stimulates production of red blood cells
Renin
releases aldosterone that helps salt/water regulation.
Kidneys
a pair of organs that filter waste from the blood and adjust concentrations of salts
Ureters
a pair of muscular tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
Urinary Bladder
organ where urine is stored
Urethra
a tube through which urine exits the bladder and the body
Renal Arteries
Blood vessels that originates from the Aorta and delivers to the kidneys
Renal Veins
blood vessel that drains from the kidney
Excretory System
Kidneys, Ureters, Urinary Bladder, Urethra, Renal Arteries, Renal Veins
Anatomy of the Kidney includes
Renal Cortex - outer region
Renal Medulla - includes the pyramids and is where urine formation takes place
Renal Pelvis - funnel shaped structure
Nephron
functional unit of the kidney; each kidney contains millions
Bowmans Capsule
cap like formation that serves as a filtration structure
Glomerulus
a fine network of capillaries in the Bowmans Capsule. Arises from the renal artery, acts like a filtration device
