Homeostasis 9.1 and 9.2 Flashcards
What is Homeostasis
A process by which plants and animals maintain an acceptable range that promotes proper cellular functions. It is a dynamic process that responds to internal and external conditions.
Internal Environment
Interstitial fluid - surrounds cells and tissues
Plasma - Fluid Portion of our blood
Feedback Mechanisms include 3 elements
- Sensor
- Integrator
- Effector
What is a negative Feedback Mechanism
a process when a body senses a change and activates mechanisms to reverse it
What is a positive Feedback Mechanism
causes a self amplifying cycle where a physiological change leads to an even greater change in the same direction ex. breast feeding and child birth
The cycle goes …
stimulus, sensor, integrator, effector, response
