Homeostasis 9.3 and 9.4 Flashcards
is the regulation of internal temperature by
negative feedback
4 mechanisms of thermal energy exchange are
Conduction, Convection, Radiation, Evaporation,
Homeotherms
Maintains their temperature regardless of the outside environment
Poikilotherms
Body temperature varies and matches external environment
Endotherm
maintains their temperature by internal mechanisms
ex. Shivering to generate thermal energy
Ectotherm
maintains body temperature by absorbing thermal energy from the environment
What is tonicity
The measure of the osmotic pressure gradient by two solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane
Tonicity takes into consideration only the
non permeable solutes
isotonic solution
solution and cellular contents are a similar concentration. No influx or efflux
Hypertonic Solution
concentration of the solution is greater than the cell. Causes the cell to shrink
Hypotonic Solution
Concentration of solution is less than cell so there will be an influx of water into the cell causing it to lyse.
