Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
- Tendency of body to work towards maintaining a set internal state
- Human body is ALWAYS trying to maintain this
- Dynamic, as internal state is constantly changing
3 Components of Feedback Systems
Receptor
Control Center
Effector
Receptor
Monitors and detects change or stimulus affecting homeostasis (Ex receptors on skin)
Control Center
Analyzes and integrates stimulus (Ex brain)
Effector
Carries out command from control center to restore homeostasis
2 Key Processes
Negative Feedback System
Positive Feedback System
Negative Feedback System
Most common!
End result is a decrease in original stimulus, restoring homeostasis (Ex thermostat in house; loss of water - drop in blood pressure - ADH released - water retained etc)
Positive Feedback System
The effector causes more of the original stimulus to occur (until physiological process finishes Ex childbirth)
