Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment
Why must conditions in our body be controlled?
The conditions inside our body must be very carefully controlled if the body is to function effectively.
What is negative feedback?
When the body responds to a negative change to bring it back to normal values.
Define effector
Muscles or glands which bring about a response
Define receptor:
Cells that detect change in the environment
Define stimuli
Changes in the environment
Define coordination centres:
Area that receive and process information, they coordinate a response.
In what order do the parts of the control systems in the body work?
Receptor (detect changes in the environment)->Coordination centre->Effector(briing about a response)
Whats the Pathway of control system for body temperature?
1) Stimulus = change in temperature
2) Receptor = skin
3) Coordination centre = brain/hypothamalus
4) Effector = skin/muscles
Whats the Pathway of control system for Water content of the body?
1) Stimulus = Change in water content in blood
2) Receptor = Brain
3) Coordination centre = pituitry gland
4) Effector = kidney
Whats the Pathway of control system for Blood glucose levels?
1) Stimulus = Change in blood glucose level
2) Receptor = Pancreas
3) Coordination centre = Pancreas
4) Effector = Liver
How does the body respond to an increase in temperature?
1) Normal temp
2) Too hot or increase in body temp
3) Receptors detect an increase in body core temperature
4) Nerve message is sent to the hypothalamus in the brain which co-ordinates response
5) Pilorelaxation (hairs lie flat) / Vasodilation / Sweating
6) Decreases temperature towards normal value (37c)
How does the body respond to an decrease in temperature?
1) Normal temp
2) Too cold or decrease in body temp
3) Receptors detect an decrease in body core temperature
4) Nerve message is sent to the hypothalamus in the brain which co-ordinates response
5) Piloerection (hairs stand up) / Vasoconstriction / Shivering
6) Increases temperature towards normal value (37c)
Why must our body temp remain stable (37c)?
Our body temperature must remain stable (37oC) due to the functioning of enzymes
Enzymes denature above 40oC
