Homeostasis Flashcards
Important variables within the body:
- blood sugar
- fluid balance
- body temperature
- oxygen levels
- blood pressure
- pH
The process by which a stable internal environment is
maintained despite changes in the external environment.
Homeostasis
Components of a homeostatic control system:
- Monitor
- Co-ordinating centre
- Regulator
A component that detects a change in variable.
Monitor
It receives a message from the monitor directs a response via a regulator.
Co-ordinating centre
This carries out the response initiated by the co-ordinating centre.
Regulator
A part of the brain that often serves as the co-ordinating centre. It also receives messages from monitors and initiates a hormonal/nervous response.
hypothalamus
Hypothalamus is also known as __________
dynamic equilibrium
It is the response triggered by changed conditions serves to reverse the change.
Negative feedback
It is the measurement of force applied to the artery walls.
blood pressure
The response triggered by changing conditions serves to move the variable even further away from its steady state.
Positive feedback
The maintenance of body temperatures within a range that enables cells to function effectively.
thermoregulation
What is the average human body temperature.
37 degrees Celsius
Types of temperature stress
- Heat stress
2. Cold stress
How does the body react in heat stress?
- Skin blood vessels will dilate
2. Sweat glands will produce perspiration
