What is Health?
physical, mental and social well being, not just the absence of disease
what is wellness?
the active process to make choices towards a healthy lifestyle.
what are the 7 dimensions of wellness?
- physical - maintaining a healthy body and seeking care. Eating well, sleeping well, monitoring the signs of illness, exercise
- emotional - understand and able to cope with your feelings and stress. Includes self care, relaxation and stress reduction
- intellectual - seek challenges in pursuit of lifeline learning; open to new ideas
- spiritual - common purpose that binds humanity together; congruency between our values and actions; inclusive of formal religion
- occupational - personal satisfaction from one’s employment. A desire to make a positive impact on an organization.
- environmental - respecting the delicate balance between one’s self and the environment; respect for living things.
- social - the ability to relate and connect with other people. Establish and maintain positive relationships with family, friends and co-workers.

Definition of Motivation?
the degree of determination, drive or desire to complete or to avoid behaviors
what are the 5 components of Motivation?
- direction - attraction to something - seeking it out - or to avoid something to improve
- intensity - the amount of effort or energy you are willing to invest
- persistence - concentration on a task or ability to stay the course when faced with obstacles
- continuity - extent to which someone will return to a task to complete
- performance - how well someone completes the task

What is self efficacy?
one’s beliefs about their ability to perform to different levels. With high self efficacy, one approaches difficult tasks as a challenge rather than as a threat to be avoided.
what is physical literacy?
the building of skills and confidence in every kind of exercise/movement. It is the cornerstone of participation and excellence in performance.
what things affect physical literacy?
age, maturation, capacity to learn
what is intrinsic motivation?
participation for the inherent pleasure and exercise - ie for the enjoyment of it.
what is extrinsic motivation?
participation for any other benefit except the inherent joy. Includes weigh-loss, to be healthy, to make someone else happy, etc.
what is the most common type of motivation?
extrinsic

if you reward the behavior it will increase the probability that the behavior will be repeated.
What are the 5 stages of Change(Intentional Behavior Change)?
- Pre-contemplation - no intention to change. Considering things like barriers, supports, stress, etc.
- contemplation - actively considering change and researching what might be required to make the change
- preparation - may include small changes - things like buying runners, researching gym memberships, developing a plan of action.
- Action - starting to make change
- maintenance - sustaining the change over time
at this point, the new behavior is now permanent
How long do most people take to make significant change?
1-2 years
