What should you look for as an exercise instructor, when starting a program in a new location?
- Emergency procedures
- locate the first aid kit/supplies

What is the name of the common screening tool used by instructors to understand participant health status?
PAR-Q+
What does the PAR-Q+ do?
Identifies any participants that may require further screening by their physician or NP prior to their participation
What is Informed Consent?
Informs participants of the risks associated with their participation, and allows for signature to signal their agreement to same
What is a Waiver?
Legal form - relinquishes rights to pursue legal action against someone - might be the instructor or the facility or the manufacturer of equipment.

As a fitness leader, when you are using a space for a class, what things should you do prior to starting the program?
- check the environment for safety - remove obstacles and clutter
- check the equipment - in safe working order?
- check manufacturer’s recommended use of equipment

What three types of risk are involved with fitness programming?
- Inherent risk - despite all precautions, injury may still occur that is no one’s fault (ie there is no one to blame for injury)
- negligence - when fault is attributed to the facility, or the instructor or the manufacturer
- product liability - manufacturer’s fault for defective equipment
What is a concussion?
Injury to the brain
What test enables the diagnosis of a concussion?
NP/physician assessment
does not show up on an x-ray, MRI or CT.
When should you suspect a concussion?
whenever there has been a significant impact to the head, face, neck or when someone is displaying symptoms
Are concussion symptoms immediate?
sometimes
can take 24-48 hours before onset in other instances
