Stamp Tax
Forced colonists to pay a direct tax on a number of items, including almanacs, newspapers, and playing cards
No taxation without representation
Colonists didn’t elect members of Parliament (British government), so they weren’t represented and couldn’t be taxed by Parliament
Townshend Acts
Taxed colonial imports, including lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea
Boston Tea Party
Protest against the tea tax in which a group of colonists boarded British ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into the sea
Quartering Act
Law that required colonists to house and supply British troops, and seen by colonists as a tax collected in goods instead of money
Boston Massacre
Incident in which a group of colonists gathered outside the customs house and began provoking the soldiers, who then fired into the crowd and killed several colonists; used by colonists as propaganda
