History & Systems Flashcards
Taylor (1998) - Timeline of social psychology
Timeline of SP:
30s- SP founded by Kurt Lewin- developed field theory
30’s-40’s group dynamics (Lewin Leadership studies)
50’s - authoritarian personality; obedience; cog. dissonance
60-70s - social cognition; helped resolve SP identity crisis
70’s - Social Learning
90’s - culture; psychophys; social development
Social Learning Theory
Bandura (1977)
Ross, Leper, and Ward (2010)
Historical events and politics have guided direction of SP (WW2-agression/ civil rights-racism and prejudice)
4 pillars that guide contemporary research:
Naive Realism - human tendency to believe that we see the world objectively and that those who don’t agree with us must be uninformed, irrational, or biased
lay dispositionism - laypeople often fail to fully appreciate the power of the situation
The motivation to see the self as consistent, rational, morale
The impact of expectations/beliefs that bias perceptions/interpretations
Social psychology contemporary topics?
stereotyping/prejudice; culture; close relationships; social cognitive neuroscience; applied problems (education/health/env. conservation)
Lewin (1964)
How to apply field-theory methods
Behavior = function of person and environment
We can’t capture group dynamics by similarities, we must document their interdependence. Not all group members are the same
What is the full-cycle model?
Mortenson and Cialdini (2010)
moving cyclicly (bi-directional)between naturalistic observation, theory, and experimentation.
The strengths of each component compensates for the weaknesses of others;
Creates ecologically valid research in terms of precision/theory
