• middle ages: demons, could sometimes be torture, not scientific
• renaissance: first, loving community mental health for the first time, but then because it was so quick and expensive it turned into prisonlike asylums
• 1800s: moral treatment began to increase
• 1900s: moral treatment and mental hospitals declined, turned to long term hosptialization
