clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment Flashcards
behavioral assessment
methods used by behavioral/cognitive clinicians that show dysfuncitonal behaviors/cognitions to produce a functional analysis of the behaviors (how theyre learned/reinforced)
personality assessment
used by psychodynamic clinicians to reveal unconsious conflicts based on personality
reliability
consistency of measures- the tool will yield similar results in similar situations (test/retest, interrater)
validity
measure accurately measures what it’s supposed to (face validity, predicative validity, concurrent validity)
clinical interview
often first contact w therapist, detailed info about personal history and reason for therapy is gathered
mental status exam
questions/observations to measure awareness, attention, time/space awareness, mem, cognition, and mood
projective tests
require client to interpret vague info, to reveal unconscious processes (rorschach , thematic apperception test, sentence completion, drawings)
-reliability/validity not great
personality inventory
range of qs about belief, behavior, and feelings
limited validity
response inventories
focus on a specific area of functioning, like emotion or cognitive processes
psychophysiological tests
measure bodily responses as possible indicators of mental probs
neurological tests
test brain to see if mental probs are result of brain prob
naturalistic observations
examine client in their own environment, often by key ppl in the client’s world
self monitoring
client measures certain behaviors/thoughts over a pd of time, though can be biased or change behavior unintentionally
syndrome
cluster of symptoms
what are 4 common factors of successful therapists?
- give feedback to their clients
- help them focus on their own behavior/thoughts
- pay attention to the client/therapist interactions
- promote self-mastery in their clients
