Who were the main Father’s of medicine in medieval england?
Hippocrates and Galen
What was the Four Humours? and who made it?
The Four Humours was a belief that a human body consisted of 4 essential fluids: blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile.
It was made by Hippocrates.
What was the Theory of Opposites? and who made it?
States that everything exists in relation to its opposite for balance e.g if you are cold, drink something hot.
What was the Miasma thoery?
That illness was caused by ‘bad air’
Reasons for lack of medical progress?
1) Science and technology - lack of scientific evidence and understanding, and dissections were illegal.
2) Religion - people thought God controlled illnesses.
3) Key Individuals - Hippocrates and Galen were highly respected and not questioned.
4) Attitudes in society and traditions - illness by demonic superstition or witchcraft.
5) Economy and government - little money funded to medical research (more money on war)
6) Education - No formal education, most people were illiterate.
