Biology (Communicable Disease) Flashcards
4 types of pathogens?
Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi and Protists
What is a communicable disease?
Diseases that can be spread by person to person or animal to animal.
Are all microorganisms pathogens?
No
How can communicable diseases be spread?
Air, Contact and Water
What is the majority of communicable disease in people?
Bacteria and Viruses
Are bacteria unicellular?
Yes
What’s the name of the process when bacteria divides in two?
Binary Fission
Are viruses true organisms?
No, they don’t have cellular structures, they are made from RNA/DNA strand enclosed in a protein coat.
How do viruses infect a cell?
Multiply itself and replace the cell’s DNA to make new viruses.
How can air transference be used to spread communicable diseases?
1) Coughing, sneezing or talking
(tiny droplets of pathogens when you sneeze, cough or talk)
How can contact be used to spread communicable diseases?
1) STI /STDS /AIDS /HIV’s
How can water be used to spread communicable diseases?
1) Certain conditions can make the water unsafe to drink
2) Contaminated water containing sewage.
