Histopath-Lec-Cytology Flashcards
-microscopic examination of cells from different body sites for diagnostic purposes
Diagnostic Cytology
2 Divisions of Cytology:
- Exfoliative Cytology
- Fine-needle Aspiration
-microscopic examination of the shed, desquamated cells from the body surfaces of cells harvested by (1. rubbing, 2. brushing) epithelial surface
Exfoliative Cytology
-procedure whereby a thin needle is inserted into the area of abnormally
appearing tissue or body fluid
Fine-needle Aspiration
cells that are shed or remove from the epithelium
DESQUAMATED CELLS:
GOALS of Exfoliative Cytology:
To detect malignancy or cancerous conditions
To detect asymptomatic cancer
To evaluate female hormonal activity
To determine genetic sex
To detect possible infection related to reproductive system
Study of cells taken from the surface of excise or incise specimen by touching them from the slides
Imprint/Abraded Cytology
Same with touch preparation
