Histology Flashcards
Functions of Nasal Cavity
Warms, moistens and filters inspired air
What is the initial part of the nasal cavity called and what is it lined by?
Vestibule
Lined by keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
What is respiratory epithelium
Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells
What lines the oropharynx and the anterior part of the epiglottis?
Non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
What is the posterior surface of the epiglottis lined by?
Respiratory epithelium
What lines the larynx?
Respiratory epithelium
What lines the vocal folds?
Stratified squamous epithelium
What is the open side of the ‘C’ of the cartilage spanned by?
Fibroelastic tissue and smooth muscle (trachealis muscle)
What makes up the walls of the bronchus?
Respiratory epithelium
A lamina propria
A muscularis consisting of a ring of smooth muscle
A submucosa with adipose tissue and some seromucous glands.
Function of club cells
Detoxification
Stem cells
Immune modulation
Surfactant production
What lines terminal bronchioles?
Stratified squamous epithelium that contain non-ciliated club cells
Type 1 Alveolar Cells
Simple squamous epithelium that lines the alveolar surfaces
Covers over 90% of the alveolar surface.
Provide a barrier of minimal thickness that is permeable to gases.
Type 2 Alveolar Cells
Polygonal shape
Free surface covered by microvilli
The cytoplasm displays dense membrane bound lamellar bodies which contain surfactant
What does the air-blood barrier consist of?
Type I alveolar cell
Endothelial Cell
Basal Lamina
What are the layers of the visceral pleura
Outer layer of simple squamous epithelium (mesothelium)
Backed by layers of fibrous and elastic connective tissue
