Histo 3 Cartilage histology Flashcards
Cartilage overview
cartilage components
Cells:
- Chondroblasts
- chondrocytes
Matrix:
- compartmentalized (territorial vs. interterritorial matrix)
- fibers
- ground substance composed of proteoglycans
what are Chondroblasts?
Cells that secrete cartilage matrix
(mitotic capabilities)
what are Chondrocytes?
mature cartilage cells in lacunae
(surrounded by and maintain matrix)
What fibers are present?
- Type II collagen is predominant
- Type I collagen is present in fibrocartilage and outer perichondrium
- elastin fibers in elastic cartilage
Types of ground cartilage?
Proteoglycans:
- Hyaluronic acid
- chondroitin sulfate
- keratin sulfate
- aggrecan
Types of cartilage
Hyaline
Elastic
fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage
and location
- surrounded by perichondrium (except articular)
- contains type II collagen
- gel-like (amorphous but homogeneous)
Location
- articular cartilage
- larynx
- trachea
- ribs
- embryonic development
Elastic cartilage
Location
More bendable and recoil to original position
Hyaline PLUS elastic fibers in matrix
surrounded by perichondrium
type II collagen
Location:
- External ear
- epiglottis
- auditory tube
Fibrocartilage
location
Needs greater strength (type 1)
Location:
- intervertebral discs
- pubic symphysis
- TMJ
Hyaline cartilage
cartilage matrix
Territorial matrix
Moderately staining
type II collagen random arrange (less amount)
cartilage matrix
interterritorial matrix
Surrounds territorial matrix
less intensely stained
more collagen II
fewer proteoglycans
What are the red arrows pointing to?
red= interterritorial matrix
red+black= territorial matrix
What is perichondrium?
- Dense irregular CT
- contains vascular supply
- hyaline and elastic cartilage
- source of new cartilage cells
- 2 layers
