Hip muscles Flashcards
The iliopsoas is made up of 2 muscles
Psoas major and iliacus
Illiacus origin
Iliac fossa
Psoas major origin
Transverse processes bodies, and intervertebral discs of the 5 lumbar vertebrae, intervertebral disc and body of the 12th thoracic vertebrae
Iliopsoas insertion
The bundles of the muscles join distally and then form the iliopsoas tendon that
inserts on the lesser trochanter of the femur
Primary concentric actions of the iliopsoas
Hip flexion
Sartorius origin and insertion
O = Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) of the ilium
I = Proximal medial tibia at pes anserinus tendon
Concentric actions of the sartorius
- Hip flexion
- Hip abduction
- Hip external rotation
- Knee flexion
Rectus femoris O and I
O = ASIS
I = Tibial tuberosity on the tibia
Concentric actions of the rectus femoris
Hip flexion
Knee extension
Tensor Fascia Latae O and I
O = Iliac crest, posterior to the ASIS
I = Blends with tendon insertions from the gluteus maximus to form the iliotibial tract
(IT band) that inserts onto Gerdy’s tubercle on the lateral tibial condyle
Concentric actions of the tensor fascia latae
Hip - flexion, abduction, internal rotation
Knee - external rotation
Pectineus concentric actions
Hip flexion, hip adduction, hip external rotation
What are the 3 hamstring muscles
Biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus
All three of the hamstring muscles have an origin on the
Ischial tuberosity
All three of the hamstring muscles have primary concentric actions of hip
_______ and knee ______ in common
Extension / flexion
