Which muscles are on the first (most superficial) layer of the foot
Flexor Digitorum Brevis
Abductor Hallucis
Abductor digiti minimi
Which muscles are on the second layer of the foot
Quadratus plantae
Lumbricals
Which muscles are on the third layer of the foot
Flexor hallucis brevis

Which muscles are on the fourth (most deep) layer of the foot
Dorsal interossei
Plantar interossei
What are the two intrinsic muscles on the dorsal aspect of the foot
Extensor digitorum brevis
Extensor hallucis brevis
What 3 systems does the foot core system consist of
Neural, active and passive subsystems
What is the neural subsystem of the foot core system
consists of mechanoreceptors in the muscles, tendons,
ligaments, plantar fascia and skin that detect stimuli such as cutaneous sensation, pressure, and tension
What is the passive subsystem of the foot core system
A passive subsystem that includes the static stabilizers of the ankle and foot * The bones of the arches, the plantar fascia, the ligaments of the foot
What is the passive subsystem of the foot core system
An active subsystem that includes the dynamic stabilizers of the ankle and foot* These include the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles
Function of the intrinsic muscles of the foot
Increase the stability of the joints within the foot (or the arches of the foot).
This will also provide a stable base for the larger extrinsic muscles to cause
the gross motions
The intrinsic muscles of the foot also function to distribute forces acting on
the foot. This may help to lower forces acting on other structures, such as the plantar fascia
