Hip Dysplasia Flashcards
What type of gait will a hip dysplasia dog have?
Bunny hopping
What orthopedic test do you do to confirm hip dysplasia?
Ortolani
What is radiographic diagnosis of hip dysplasia?
Less than 50% coverage of the femoral head, Morgan line
When is diagnosis of hip dysplasia usually made?
3-8 months
How is an ortolani test performed?
Under sedation, feels for pop when femoral head returns to acetabulum
What % of hip dysplasia dogs improve with conservative managment?
80%
Why might clinical signs assoc. w/hip dysplasia return later in life after improvement earlier in life?
Progression of degenerative changes
What is a Morgan line?
Osteophyte formation at insertion of joint capsule
How do you rate joint laxity?
Penn HIP score
How old does a dog have to be to get an official OFA rating?
At least 2yo
Is OFA or Penn HIP more subjective?
OFA
What is Penn HIP based on?
Distraction index measured by the radiologys
What distraction index is a good prognosis for not developing hip dysplasia?
<0.3
At what age does a Penn HIP analysis work best?
1yo
What constitutes conservative treatment of hip dysplasia?
NSAIDs, weight management, chondroprotective agents, conservative exercise
What chondroprotectives can you use to treat hip dysplasia?
Glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate
What are surgical options for hip dysplasia treatment?
Juvenile pelvic symphysiodesis, TPO, total hip replacement, femoral head and neck ostectomy
Cauterizing or stapling the growth plate so that you encourage more acetabular coverage of the femoral head as the dog grows
Juvenile pelvic symphysiodesis
At what age would you perform a juvenile pelvic symphysiodesis?
14-20wk (difficult to dx at this age)
Does hip dysplasia surgery prevent degenerative joint disease?
No
How do you prevent hip dysplasia?
Conscious breeding, proper nutrition during growth
What type of nutrition is assoc. w/higher incidence of hip dysplasia?
Over-nutrition
What is a femoral head and neck ostectomy?
Removal of head and neck of femur resulting in a “pseudo-joint”
What are two requirements for good stability of a femoral head and neck ostectomy?
Well muscled and good body weight
What type of lameness might result from a femoral head and neck ostectomy?
Mechanical (not painful) lameness d/t limb shortening
What hip dysplasia treatment option is considered a salvage procedure?
Femoral head and neck ostectomy
What relatively new procedure eliminates pain associated with hip dysplasia progression?
Denervation of hip joint capsule
Which animals are the best candidates for a femoral head and neck ostectomy?
Small animals wt 20-30lb (w/good muscle and BCS)
Which test looks for hip laxity?
Ortolani sign
Young dogs w/minimal 2* degenerative changes and a deep acetabulum are good candidates for which hip dysplasia surgical treatment?
Triple pelvic osteotomy
What are clinical signs of hip dysplasia?
Difficulty rising and laying down on pelvic limbs, bunnty hopping
What is the salvage procedure performed for hip dysplasia dogs that cannot have a TPO or THR?
Femoral head and neck ostectomy
