Elbow Dysplasia Flashcards
Umbrella term for several congenital abnormalities of the elbow
Elbow dysplasia
What can a dog with elbow dysplasia be affected with?
Ununited anconeal process, OCD of humeral condyle, fragmented medial coronoid process, elbow incongruity
What age of dogs are affected by elbow dysplasia?
Young dogs
What are radiographic findings that suggest potential fragmentation of the MCP?
Ulna sclerosis and degenerative changes above anconeal process
What breeds are most commonly affected by an ununited anconeal process?
GSD, bassett hound, labs, Newfoundlands
What are clinical signs of elbow dysplasia?
Forelimb lameness, pain flex/extension of elbow
When should physes be closed?
4-5mo of age
What is the best radiographic view to visualize an ununited anconeal process?
Flexed lateral projection
What is an ununited anconeal process?
Anconeal center of ossification fails to fuse w/the ulna
What is the best diagnostic modality for elbow dysplasia?
CT
How can you treat an ununited anconeal process?
Excision, lag screw fixation and prox. ulnar ostectomy
Abnormal endochondral ossification resulting in thickening of the articular cartilage
OCD
What are potential factors that can result in OCD of the humeral condyle?
Growth rate, genetics, hormonal imbalance, diet
What breeds are commonly affected by OCD of the humeral condyle?
GSD, lab, GR, Newfoundland, Rotty
Bilateral OCD of the humeral condyle exists ___% of the time
50%
What will you see on radiographs that might suggest OCD of the humeral condyle?
Visible flattening, subchondral bone defect, sclerosis, osteophytosis
What diagnostic test for elbow dysplasia can also be therapeutic?
Arthroscopy
How do you treat an OCD of the humeral condyle?
Surgical removal of flap and debridement of subchondral bone
What breeds are commonly affected by fragmented medial coronoid process?
Labs, GR, Newfoundlands, Rottys
What secondary changes assoc. w/FCP will you see on radiographs that can help you make your diagnosis?
Sclerosis along trochlear notch of ulna, degenerative joint disease
Term used to describe poor alignment of the joint surfaces of the elbow
Elboq incongruity
What are two features that illustrate incongruity of the elbow?
Abnormal shape of ulnar trochlear notch, step between radius and ulna
What are clinical signs of elbow dysplasia?
Intermittent forelimb lameness, pain on flex/extension of elbow
What is a sub-total coronoidectomy used to treat?
Fragmented medial coronoid process
