Hip Anatomy Flashcards

Q

Hip: Femoroacetabular

Impingement

A

A condition of the hip joint resulting from excess bone growth or deformity of the acetabular socket rim, femoral head or neck, or in majority of cases both.

The irregularity causes narrowing and misalignment between the femoral head and labrum, creating a pinching situation where movement is restricted or painful.

Q

Articular Cartilage

A

Lines the outside of the acetabulum and femoral head and provides cushioning during weight bearing.

Q

Labrum

A

A fibrocatiralgeouns ring of type one cartilage and hyaline cartilage. It forms a gasket around the socket. It helps keep the femoral head in place through its wide range of motions.

Q

Capsule

A

Ligament that helps stabilize the hip joint and keeps femoral head inside the acetabular socket. Attached distally at base of femoral neck and proximay around labrum and acetabular rim.

Q

What anatomical structures are in central compartment as opposed to peripheral compartment?

A

Central compartment contains the labrum

Peripheral compartment contains the femoral head and neck.

Q

Capsuleotomy

A

Where incisions are made in the capsule to provide access to the acetabular rim, labrum and femoral head neck junction.

Once complete a surgeon may use a suture to suspend the capsule out of their view to improve visualization.

Q

Center Edge Angle

A

Used to describe a pincer infringement. When present, surgeon removes the honey abnormality and brings CEA down to a degree needed.

Q

Anatomic Labrum Repair

A

Goal of anatomic labrum repair is to restore the suction seal, restore contact of the labrum to the femoral head to facilitate proprioception and normal stability to joint.

Q

What is a CAM impingement

A

When there is a honey overgrowth on the femur and femoral head is no longer spherical. Surgeon will remove this lesion so that it doesn’t cause further damage to labrum.

Q

FemoralPlasty

A

Using shaving and ablation to remove soft tissues and bone structures. Su from will use intraoperative fluoroscopy to ensure femoral head is back to spherical shape.
